Leadership Wow
Every idea starts with a problem: Team Building Workshops are not effective enough.
Having just attended another fun team-building activity where we made spaghetti towers connected with marshmallows, I walked away thinking: “I’m not quite sure how that propelled the team’s effectiveness. There must be a better way”.
As an HR Business Partner, there was no shortage of leaders asking me to get involved with their off-site and requesting the same thing: a team-building workshop. I was supposed to know what to do to fix their problems: team members competing with each other, lack of psychological safety to speak up, limited collaboration and communication, and team members working in silos, generating redundant work. What was a leader to do?
Ah, yes, because I was supposed to be the expert, leaders turned to me for answers. So, I decided to try and find a solution.
Over the coming months, I researched extensively on what psychology, sociology, and behavioral science had discovered on teams. What makes some teams excel and others flounder? How can a workshop unlock the power of a team to take it from “blah” to “Wow”?
Working for a large Fortune 500 company at the time, I partnered with three other HR colleagues who were also passionate about building successful teams. Together, we designed a team effectiveness model and workshops that we tested on various teams throughout the organization and eventually launched the program to the entire company. The results were astounding. Without much internal marketing, we had over a thousand downloads of our program across 20 business units and 19 markets globally within the first month. 100% of users recommended our workshop. We were on to something!
As I’ve moved on in my career, I took the concrete theories that I learned from my experiences and played with it some more. I designed my own models and workshops, which I then tested on many different teams, eventually landing with a model that is simple, punchy and effective. The WOW Model and Workshops for Team Success was born. I also designed a Team Assessment Tool that goes hand-in-hand with the model to help teams evaluate their current team’s health.
